Ljubljana receives Tourism for Tomorrow Award
Ljubljana was awarded the Tourism for Tomorrow Destination Award at the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) solemn event on 15 April 2015 in Madrid.
Just to remind, Ljubljana has been selected as a finalist for the WTTC "Tourism for Tomorrow 2015" award, which is given out by the international organisation, World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).
The Tourism for Tomorrow Awards are based upon sustainable tourism principles and aim to educate and inspire tourism providers and destinations on how to improve their practice of sustainable tourism. They are regarded to be the highest accolade for sustainability within the global travel and tourism industry.
Ljubljana, the European Green Capital 2016, won the prestigious award among the fellow finalists of Taiwan (Northeast and Yilan Coast) and Sozopol (Bolgaria).
Delegation from Ljubljana at the WTTC Summit in Madrid was headed by Mayor Zoran Janković with the presence of the Slovenian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain, Aljaž Gosnar. The award was accepted by Deputy Mayor, Tjaša Ficko and Petra Stušek, the Managing Director at Ljubljana Tourism. Prior in her destination presentation in Madrid and upon her acceptance speech, Petra Stušek emphasised the importance of Tourism Ljubljana's collaboration with the City of Ljubljana and its citizens in designing the sustainable tourist offer of the city. ‘Visitors feel comfortable only if citizens feel the same. We can achieve this only by working together,’ she pointed out. Deputy Mayor, Tjaša Ficko, invited the attended to the most beautiful city in the world and pointed out the importance of the award for Ljubljana and its global recognition.
Ljubljana has been long committed to sustainable development as is reflected in the sustainable development strategy of tourism in Ljubljana up to 2020. The Ljubljana stakeholders were given motivation for the mutual economic, environmental and cultural flowering by closing the centre for motor vehicle.
The WTTC Tourism for Tomorrow Award will have positive economic effects on tourism organisations in Ljubljana and Slovenia.
