10 Years of the Funicular to the Ljubljana Castle
On 28 December 2016, 10 years have passed since the funicular railway brought first passengers to the top of the Castle Hill. Since then some 2,900,000 passengers rode on the funicular.
In the days before the anniversary, on 10 December 2016, the funicular broke its daily record: in one day it transported as many as 3,080 passengers. All daily records until then were set during the summer season, and the new December record proves that Ljubljana justly found its place on the list of ten best winter city breaks drawn up by the British newspaper the Guardian.
The modern and unobtrusive design of the funicular railway which complements the traditional cultural identity of the Ljubljana Castle is well-liked among domestic and foreign visitors. When the weather is nice it offers a beautiful view of the city, and because of the quick and comfortable connection to the old city centre it became indispensable.
In the effort to preserve the green environment in the wider area of the Castle Hill the funicular railway has proven itself as one of the most important city acquisitions which is definitively backed up by statistical data: at the end of 2010 the funicular took the millionth passenger to the Ljubljana Castle, in mid-August 2014 the two millionth, and the three millionth is expected in May 2017.
During its ten years in operation the funicular railway recorded over 525,000 rides in both directions and 47,500 operating hours. It is one of the most complex cable railways. The daily, weekly, monthly, six-monthly, annual and all other checks are carried out in line with the manufacturer’s instructions and legal requirements. With the exception of some initial operating problems with electronics and the suspension of its operation in 2013 because of regular planned repairs the availability of the funicular is very high as it operates all year round. Namely, the maintenance works are carried out outside its operating hours.
