2022 was a great year for the Ljubljana Castle

Again more than one million visitors came to the Ljubljana Castle in 2022, and the funicular railway transported three times as many passengers as the year before. These are just two of the many achievements that were recorded at the Ljubljana Castle Public Institute last year.

The year 2022 at the Ljubljana Castle was marked by a much larger number of visitors than in the previous two years, which were in the grip of the epidemic. Counters recorded 1,004,349 visitors, and 428,892 passengers took the funicular railway. Since the start of operation and until August last year, it has already transported five million passengers. There were 327 events, 397 wedding ceremonies and 839 guided tours carried out on the castle premises.

The director of the Ljubljana Castle Public Institute, Mateja Avbelj Valentan, expressed her satisfaction with the growing number of visitors: »Given that we have experienced a significant decline in tourism and culture in the last two years, we are grateful to our founder – the City of Ljubljana, for supporting us substantially over the years 2020 and 2021, when, due to changed circumstances, we did not reach the share of own revenues, as we did in the times before the epidemic. This way, we were able to keep all the jobs, which turned out as positive last year, when tourism, culture and the meetings industry came back on a much larger scale.«

A successful tourist year also for Hostel Celica

Hostel Celica, which is managed by the Ljubljana Castle Public Institute, was open to visitors throughout the year. From April onwards, 80% occupancy of beds was recorded, and during the main three summer months, it was already at 95%. The majority of guests were from Great Britain, Germany, Italy, and again from the United States of America. Throughout the year, Hostel Celica held 81 program events in the fields of music, fine arts, and educational and social programs.
