“Access City Award 2012”

Ljubljana has received special mention from the European Commission for increased accessibility in the field of transport and related infrastructure.

On Thursday 1 December 2011, during a conference in Brussels on the European Day of People with Disabilities, Ljubljana was given special European Commission mention for increased accessibility in the fields of transport and related infrastructure. Ljubljana earned special mention from the ‘Access City Award 2012’ jury for its consistent and integrated concept of accessibility in the city centre which among other things includes buses fitted with audio and video stop announcements, Braille signs at bus stops and a city centre tactile map.

In September 2011, the City of Ljubljana entered a European Commission public competition for an award for accessibility for people with disabilities called the 'Access City Award 2012', and, of 114 entrants from 23 EU countries, has made it to the final shortlist of eight European cities.

The 'Access City Award' is a European Commission initiative designed to encourage the realisation of the fundamental objectives of the European Disability Strategy 2010–2020. The purpose of the initiative is to showcase and reward cities with more than 50,000 residents that systematically plan and take steps to improve accessibility to the urban environment for people with disabilities in four key areas, namely the built environment and public spaces; transport and related infrastructure; information and communication, including Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), and public facilities and services.

The European ‘Access City Award 2012’ for disabled-friendly cities went to Salzburg in Austria. The other three cities in the grand final were Krakow, Poland, Marburg in Germany and Santander, Spain. Apart from Ljubljana, special European Commission mention was given to Grenoble, France, Olomouc in the Czech Republic and Terrassa, Spain.
