Already the 23rd European Mobility Week in Ljubljana
For the 23rd consecutive year, the City of Ljubljana is participating in the European Mobility Week, the biggest international campaign for the promotion of sustainable mobility, held every year between 16 and 22 September.
Again this year, we are paying additional attention to raising awareness of the benefits of walking, cycling, using public transport, and other sustainable modes of travel through various one-day events, weekly activities and permanent measures.
Shared Public Space
The central theme of this year's European Mobility Week is »Shared Public Space«. A well-organized public space brings many benefits to every community, which we are also aware of in the City of Ljubljana. Wherever residents, their ways of carrying out daily and other journeys and activities important to them are treated equally, the quality of life is better: there is more social justice, greater safety, less noise and air pollution.
Again this year, the varied program is intended for all age groups and the diverse interests of all citizens.
A varied program instead of cars on the streets
As part of the European Mobility Week, we will close some streets and roads to motor traffic before the Car Free Day, which is on 22 September, and prepare a varied program on them. On Tuesday, 17 September, between 7:00 and 19:00, the connecting route from Brodarjev trg to Rusjanov trg will be closed. On the same day, a section of Železna cesta will be closed between 9:00 and 19:00. On Wednesday, 18 September, between 8:00 and 12:00, Novo Polje III road will be closed from the Zajčja Dobrava guest house, and on Thursday, 19 September, also between 8:00 and 12:00, part of the Kamnogoriška cesta between Ulica Bratov Babnik and Čebelarska ulica. On 19 September, between 8:00 and 13:00, part of the Pot k sejmišču road will be closed. On Friday, 20 September, Črtomirova ulica from Linhartova cesta to Hacquetova ulica will be closed between 9:00 and 13:00, and Eipprova ulica between 9:00 and 12:00. On Saturday, 21 September, between 9:00 and 22:00, Vošnjakova ullica from Dvorakova ulica to Hotel Lev will be closed due to an event.
Car Free Day
On the Car Free Day, Sunday, 22 September, the use of Ljubljana passenger transport buses will be free of charge. We will provide free transportation by city buses to events within the EMW throughout the week for kindergartens and elementary schools in the City of Ljubljana.
On Sunday, 22 September, Poljanska cesta between Peglezn and Ulica Janeza Pavla will be closed between 10:00 and 22:00, due to the street festival on Poljanska cesta. Between 8:00 and 18:00, the traffic regime on the Cesta slovenskih kmečkih uporov (road to the Castle) will also be changed. As on all other days of the year, visitors are invited to make a more sustainable choice to access the Castle – via one of the footpaths or the funicular railway, where a reduced return ticket price will apply during the entire European Mobility Week.
This year, as part of European Mobility Week, we prepared 12 permanent measures, 19 weekly activities and over 80 one-day events. All events are admission-free for visitors.
The complete program of the European Mobility Week 2024 is published here.
We will keep you updated on any changes in dates and times due to weather conditions.
Permanent measures of the European Mobility Week 2024 in Ljubljana
1. Bike park Polje
In June 2024, we built a new bicycle park, already the eighth in Ljubljana, near Polje Primary School. Bike parks are designed as public areas for active spending of free time for visitors of all age groups. They are primarily intended for playing and skill training with various types of driving aids, everything from bicycles, kick scooters, skateboards, rollerblades and rollerskates to push cars. They are laid out as undulating asphalt paths, grass is planted around the track, and the area is completed with benches and bike racks.
2. Renovation of Čufarjeva ulica (Resljeva–Kotnikova)
After the renovation of the first part of Čufarjeva ulica between Miklošičeva ulica and Resljeva cesta, which was completed in June 2023, we started the renovation of the second part of Čufarjeva ulica between Resljeva cesta and Kotnikova ulica in June 2024. With the renovation, we will improve accessibility and traffic safety, especially for the children of the nearby kindergarten and school, as we will also limit access to cars from this area. In terms of appearance, the street will imitate the layout of the previous section.
3. Construction of areas for pedestrians and cyclists on part of Jurčkova cesta and Lorenzova cesta
During the reconstruction and overhaul of the sewage system on a part of Jurčkova cesta, which is being carried out within the scope of the Clean.For You project, we will mark areas for pedestrians and cyclists on the section from Peruzzijeva cesta to the roundabout at Supernova, including the roundabout. We will also build a new connection for pedestrians on the northern section of Jurčkova cesta, that is, on the Na požaru street to Lorenzova cesta, and there we will construct a raised pedestrian crossing (speed bump) on Lorenzova cesta. We will also add a new crossing and guidance for cyclists at the intersection of Ob dolenjski železnici street and Lorenzova cesta. On the latter, when the road is renovated, we will also mark surfaces for pedestrians and cyclists along its entire length.
4. Renovation of part of the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship on Grba
Before the end of the year, we will finish the reconstruction of the Grba section of the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship and improve accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists and mobility impaired people. We will completely renovate the existing stairs and run a bicycle path alongside the stairs through the forest as a connection to the Path route, which will also serve as a ramp for persons with reduced mobility.
5. Improvements for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users
By the end of this year, we will, that is, we have already implemented several infrastructure measures for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users, which will further improve accessibility, traffic safety and encourage sustainable mobility. Among them are:
- marking of special crossings for pedestrians at the Center Rog (Petkovškovo nabrežje) and the Žale cemetery (Koželjeva ulica);
- construction of the missing part of the sidewalk on Hotimirova ulica between Česnikova ulica and Obirska ulica;
- marking of cycling surfaces at Prule from Špica to Janežičeva ulica;
- marking of a bicycle lane on Mencingerjeva ulica and Cesta v Rožno dolino;
- installation of traffic signals for cyclists to travel in the opposite direction along the one-way street on Emonska cesta;
- construction of the LPP stop on Pesarska cesta and Kajuhova cesta (extension of the platform with the reinforcement of the surface);
- change of the traffic regime in Šiška in the area between Celovška cesta, Na Jami, Vodnikova cesta and Šišenska cesta (one-way streets, speed bumps, marking of cycling surfaces, regulation of irregular parking, trees).
6. P+R Letališka
With the renovation of Letališka cesta we also built a P+R parking area alongside the road and the final stop for LPP buses. The parking area will start operating according to the P+R (park and ride) system in September 2024, and it is connected to the Ljubljana passenger transport lines 7 and 27. The project was co-financed by the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund and the Republic of Slovenia.
7. Yellow lane on Tržaška cesta (on the section Viška cesta–Trg MDB)
To encourage the use of public transport, we will draw a yellow lane on Tržaška cesta, namely on the section between Viška cesta and Trg mladinskih delovnih brigad towards the centre. This gives priority to city buses in particular, which will reduce their travel time.
8. Friend KAVALIR service
Friend KAVALIR is a sustainable service of the Ljubljana passenger transport company Ljubljanski potniški promet, within the framework of which we will organize and carry out safe, reliable transport in the area of the Sostro District Community to medical institutions, pharmacies and administrative units in Ljubljana. The service will be aimed mainly at elderly and vulnerable groups. The transport will be carried out using an electric van donated by the Lekarna Ljubljana pharmacy. It will be available from 1 October 2024, every working day from 7:00 to 15:00. The FRIEND service was developed as a response to the challenges of modern society and is adapted to the needs of citizens to whom we want to offer a sustainable and friendly solution within the framework of the service.
9. Entry onto LPP buses also at second doors
In order to speed up the boarding of passengers on city buses, we plan to introduce entry at second doors as well. We expect that the measure will significantly contribute to faster bus filling and, consequently, to shorter travel times, further encouraging the use of the city's public passenger transport.
10. Greening of 15 roofs of LPP bus stops
We are continuing to green the roofs of LPP bus stops. We plant exclusively indigenous plants grown in the University Botanic Gardens Ljubljana, which are resistant to drought and high levels of solar radiation and are attractive to bees and other pollinators. The planting will continue throughout September, during European Mobility Week 2024, seven bus stop roofs will be planted: two stops on Zaloška cesta – UKC, five stops on Tržaška cesta – Tobačna and Mirje, and Glince at the library.
11. Construction of an experience bridge over the Ljubljanica River
The experience bridge will connect Nove Fužine and Štepanjsko naselje, intended for pedestrian and cyclist use only. Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of this year, with completion at the end of 2025. The renovated open space of the two embankments of the Ljubljanica River, which will be connected by the new bridge into an experiential and functional whole, will primarily be aimed at improving the living environment of existing neighbourhoods with the ambition of creating a modern, multi-purpose park environment with diverse programs and ambiances, which will also attract visitors from other parts of the city and promote sustainable mobility and quality spending of leisure time.
12. Contents of the Traffic ZOO for the youngest
Kindergartens and schools can use free-of-charge educational materials to facilitate making the first steps into the world of traffic, and educators can use them as an aid for additional and optional teaching content. It is an educational program of the Ljubljana ZOO for schools and kindergartens, where we strive for greater traffic safety with the help of animal role models and biological and creative workshops. During the European Mobility Week 2024, a new anthem will also be available for children to learn to behave safely in traffic.
As an additional measure that will permanently contribute to a better-quality public space, especially in the neighbourhoods, this year, as part of the campaign »Man, take care of your city« with the slogan »Nature is not a parking area«, we will clean up and re-green several greens in various district communities, that were destroyed by cars by being driven over or parked on, presumably by the end of October. With planting, we will prevent irregular parking in green areas and raise awareness that nature is not a parking area. With this measure, we are pursuing the goals of the sustainable transport policy and mitigating the effects of climate change, in line with the guidelines of the Mission Ljubljana on the path to carbon neutrality by 2030.
