»Consideration Zone«

On 18 June 2015, the campaign »Consideration Zone« was conducted in the city centre of Ljubljana with the purpose of reminding cyclists of appropriate bike-riding in the pedestrian zone.

With the expansion of pedestrian areas, construction of new bridges, renovation of city squares and the improvement of walking and cycling conditions in the past 8 years Ljubljana has made remarkable progress regarding the quality of life in the city. The fact that Ljubljana is on the right path is reaffirmed by data showing an increase in the number of trips made on foot or by bicycle, which are healthy, cheap and spatially undemanding forms of mobility in the city.

The pedestrian zone in the city centre of Ljubljana is a nice example of the mix of different forms of mobility: pedestrians, bicycles, Kavalir electric vehicles, skateboards, tricycles. The needs of these groups differ slightly but they are all united by the desire to feel safe and well. For this reason, consideration and mutual respect are important values in the pedestrian zone which make coexistence of different traffic groups possible.

Being aware of this, the group ZaMestoPoDveh (For-Cities-On-Two) and the Ljubljana Cycling Network have prepared a campaign intended to primarily remind cyclists of the appropriate way to ride a bicycle in the pedestrian zone.

The campaign was conducted on 18 June at several locations in Ljubljana. By doing this, we wanted, on one hand, to thank cyclists and pedestrians for choosing these most sustainable city traffic modes, and, on the other, warn the cyclist who do not follow the basic rules of considerate behaviour in the pedestrian zones to change their attitude. Posters, fliers and explanations reminded cyclists they have to pay special attention to pedestrians in the pedestrian zones and not endanger them by exceeding the speed limit.
