December 2015 in Ljubljana

Ljubljana is adorned with holiday lights and decorations. The December atmosphere will escalate to public open-air celebrations in the city’s streets and squares.

This year again, the traditional December programme includes the St. Nicholas Fair, the St. Nicholas Procession, the Good Fairy, performances of organ-grinders in the streets and squares, the Christmas Concert, the Father Frost Procession, street theatre performances, music programme in city squares and the New-Year’s Eve open-air celebration with fireworks.

Two last year’s novelties remain on the programme: the Magical Forest – creative children’s workshops, opening this year on 3 December and continuing until Christmas, and New-Year’s celebration for children on 31 December, starting at 16.00 at Congress Square.

The newest addition to Ljubljana’s original festive decorations with the traditional space theme is the Moonolith, a unique monument to the moon and stars, designed by Martin Bricelj Baraga. The Moonolith is a huge dark sphere responsive to human presence. Its surface reflects the night sky, the moon and the stars. As you approach the Monolith, the constellations follow your movements. The installation is on display from 3 December until 3 January next year in the Republic Square.

Once again this year, in line with the European Green Capital 2016, sustainably oriented returnable packaging is used at fairs within the scope of December 2015 in Ljubljana. The aim is to decrease the quantity of packaging waste and to keep the environment clean. By renting stalls the culinary providers also bought ceramic dishes to offer to the fair visitors in exchange for a security deposit of 2 euro.

The music programme on the stages in New Square, Congress Square, City Square, French Revolution Square and Pogačar Square includes many Slovenian and foreign musicians: Modrijani, Društvo mrtvih pesnikov, Maja Založnik & Moonshine, DJ JAMirko, Neisha, Nina Badrić, Janez Bončina Benč, Željko Bebek, Ivan Zak, Nina Pušlar, Vlado Kreslin in Mali bogovi, Željo Joksimović, Muff, Tabu, Klemen Klemen and others.

This year’s December programme is co-financed from the budget in the amount of 113,000 euro. Part of the December events programme is covered by donors.

From 27 November until 3 January 2016, free-of-charge parking is provided in Vodnik Square: from Monday till Friday between 18.30 and 5.00, on Saturdays from 18.30, on Sundays and holidays all day long until 5.00 the next day.

A festive note is also added to the regular guided tours in December. From 4 December until the end of the year, the Ljubljana Tourism offers a tour of the festively decorated Ljubljana, an evening stroll through the city during which the visitors can enjoy the fairy-tale Ljubljana, starting at 17.00 in front of the Ljubljana Tourist Information Centre at Stritar Street.
