EMW sustainable measure: planting bus stop roofs

A sustainable measure of this year’s European Mobility Week came to life – planting of city bus stop roofs.

The pilot project aimed at covering roofs of three bus stops with honey plants which attract bees started by planting the roof at the Aškerčeva bus stop.

On all three roofs we are going to plant exclusively autochthonous plants grown in the University Botanic Gardens Ljubljana which are resistant to drought, high levels of solar radiation and are attractive to bees and other pollinators.

The city honey, as analyses of reference laboratories have shown, doesn’t contain any heavy metals, pesticides, insecticides… The bees filter the nectar and make clean honey. The plants at bus stops have another role in addition to feeding the bees – they absorb rainwater and such roofs reduce the heat island effect. We recommend the city honey which, due to its pollen diversity, is even richer in different minerals and vitamins.
