Global Green Destinations Day

On 27 and 28 September 2016, the two-day Global Green Destinations Day conference is going to be held in Ljubljana. It is the main green destination event at global level bringing together leading experts in the field of sustainable development and green tourism.

The main partner and co-organiser of the event is Ljubljana Tourism in co-operation with the Slovenian Tourist Board. Last year Ljubljana won the candidacy for the green conference of the year with the title European Green Capital 2016 contributing to its victory. At the international event the most successful sustainable oriented tourist destinations are going to be presented within the framework of the Top 100 Sustainable Destinations 2016 competition, and at the celebration the highest-ranked destinations and providers of green solutions in tourism are going to receive recognitions for their responsible environmental and social practices.

The two-day international event, supported by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and organised by the international organisation Green Destinations and the Institute of Sustainable Tourism GoodPlace, serves as a living laboratory for green solutions in tourism and examples of good (green) practices. The main topics of the event presented in specialised discussions and study panels are going to focus on key aspects of sustainable development in tourism, development of smart cities and local communities, green transport of today and tomorrow, social changes, sustainable management and education on green tourism.

The Global Green Destinations Day is bringing together leading sustainable oriented destinations from around the world, tourism operators, hoteliers, representatives of companies offering practical green solutions in tourism, and representatives of governmental and non-governmental institutions in the field of sustainable policy planning. In addition to the announcement of the 100 greenest destinations, the key mission of the event is to enable participants to forge new ties and allow them access to strategic partnerships and international networks. Namely, the objective of its organisers and partners is to promote a brighter, more closely knit and sustainable future in tourism.

Among the most interesting experiences is the Ljubljana green outdoor classroom where participants, led by licenced guides from Ljubljana Tourism, are going to learn about green points and sustainable measures which brought the title European Green Capital 2016 to Ljubljana. Namely, Ljubljana is the first European Union capital to implement the Zero Waste strategy in waste management and its city centre is completely closed to motor traffic.
