Guided Tours at the Žale Cemetery

Within the scope of the Heritage Days of European Cemeteries free guided tours are being offered at the Žale Cemetery between 25 and 31 May 2015.

The Heritage Days of European Cemeteries are organised by the international Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE) and during two free guided tours a day the guide takes the visitors to the renowned Plečnik’s Žale, to the graves of famous Slovenes, shows them the work of well-known sculptors and other significant parts of the Žale Cemetery, which is actually an open-air museum.

As cultural heritage cemeteries are an important part of our history and art, and as such, they are tourist sites where history and culture of the local people can be felt. The Žale Cemetery is such a place.
Due to its high cultural-historical and artistic value, the Žale Cemetery is one of the most beautiful European cemeteries. In professional spheres and the wider public around the world it is admired for Plečnik’s heritage, the creations of well-known Slovenian artists and its horticulture. The Plečnik’s Žale – Garden of All Saints is certainly the most original solution to cemetery architecture in the 20th century. It is the only facility of this kind in Europe and in 2007 it was awarded the European Heritage Label, arising from an intergovernmental initiative. Since 2009 it is also a cultural monument of national importance. Now it is in the process of being placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Many historical personalities rest at Žale: poets, writers, sculptors, painters, composers, architects, engineers, politicians, athletes. And there are many graves from World War I and II. The cemetery is also important as the second largest city park and it is attractive in all seasons.
