Heritage Days of European Cemeteries

Cemeteries as cultural heritage are an important part of our history and art, and therefore also tourist landmarks of cities where history and culture of the local residents can be felt. One of them is the Žale cemetery.

The Žale cemetery is due to its high cultural, historical and artistic value one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Europe. With Plečnik’s heritage, creations of famous Slovenian artists and its horticulture it is admired by the professional and wider public around the world. Plečnik’s Žale – Garden of All Saints is certainly the most creative cemetery architecture solution of the 20th century. It is a unique structure in Europe and in 2007 it received the European Heritage Label on an intergovernmental initiative. Since 2009 it is also recognised as a cultural monument of national importance. Currently the procedure for its entry onto the UNESCO World Heritage List is underway. Many giants from our history are buried at Žale: poets, writers, sculptors, painters, composers, architects, actors, engineers, politicians, athletes.
