International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

For years the City of Ljubljana has been paying particular attention to the issue of violence against women and has been actively cooperating with nongovernmental organisations in the field.

Through public procurements the City of Ljubljana is co-financing a broad range of programs for women and children, victims of violence (for instance safe housing, counselling services), as well as for aggressors (workshops) and is actively participating in various awareness-raising activities.

The 16 days of activities against violence against women is part of the world campaign for women’s human rights, starting on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, declared by the United Nations, and concluding on 10 December, the Human Rights Day.
The aim of this year’s campaign is to encourage the state to implement the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence.
During these days, the City of Ljubljana is organising various activities in co-operation with nongovernmental organisations. In addition to all-day activities, numerous media activities (radio and television broadcasts and announcements in the print media) are going to be carried out.
During this period the public institutes of the City of Ljubljana (Ljubljana Pharmacies, Community Health Care Centre, Kinodvor City Cinema, Cinema Šiška…) are joining the preventive awareness-raising campaign on the unacceptability of violence against women by offering their facilities free-of-charge for the broadcast of an animated ad on unacceptability of violence against women, and the city passenger transport company LPP is putting its busses at disposal.

On Wednesday, 25 November 2015, a consultation session titled »Violence against women and necessary legislative changes« was held at the City Hall, organised by the Association SOS Help-line for Women and Children – Victims of Violence, the Association for Non-Violent Communication and the City of Ljubljana. Within the scope of the consultation speakers addressed the shortcomings of the current legislation, the potential for its improvement and the necessity of establishing a comprehensive and coordinated support system for victims of violence.
