Ljubljana is once again the Most Bee-Friendly Municipality

On Saturday, 26 November 2022, at the Beekeeping Tourism Day, which was held in Višnja Gora, we received the title the Most Bee-Friendly Municipality 2022. This is the third title for the City of Ljubljana, we already received it in 2017 and 2019.

In the City of Ljubljana, we have been actively developing beekeeping since 2015, with the greatest emphasis on education, promoting and conserving biodiversity, awareness-raising and international cooperation, and the transfer of good practices abroad.

Every year we carry out many activities that emphasize the importance of bees for the lives of all of us. On 20 May, World Bee Day, we prepare a varied program that continues throughout the whole month of May, and with which we want to present the immense importance of bees and other pollinators to the citizens.

In the spring, among other things, we carry out the late mowing campaign »We will cut the grass when the bees are fed« and we plant honey plants in various locations around the city, also within the scope of renovating roads and other public areas.

In the allotment garden area at Grba, we set up a Honey learning garden, where we connect urban gardening, local self-sufficiency and bees, that is, all pollinators. For the third consecutive year, we are planting the roofs of bus stop stations, thereby mitigating the consequences of climate change and providing pasture for various pollinators. Every year, we also organize a Honey Day in Ljubljana, where local beekeepers, suppliers of local agricultural produce and products, and representatives of the Bee Path present their work and honey products.

In the centre of our activities is also the Bee Path, which we created in 2015 as part of the Ljubljana, European Green Capital program. Today, the Bee Path already connects 44 members and suppliers who co-create the activities on this path and the program. As a good practice, the Bee Path has already been transferred to 9 European cities, and this year we also established an international network of cities with a bee path, the BeePathNet.

Thirteen municipalities took part in this year's Most Bee-Friendly Municipality 2022 competition, in addition to Ljubljana, the municipalities of Dobrna and Domžale made it to the finals, while the City of Ljubljana won first place based on our efforts both in the field of local beekeeping development and the expansion of the good practice of the Bee Path in Ljubljana across Europe and the wider world.
