May, the Month of Green Areas

Ljubljana, the European Green Capital, has entered its fifth green month, dedicated to green areas. Within this project, European Green Week will start at the end of May.

Ljubljana, the European Green Capital 2016, has according to the European Commission conducted the most changes in the quality of life in the shortest period of time. Already in 2007, we started implementing the Vision of Ljubljana 2025 and pursued a sustainable development of the city, reaching for the set goals – to ensure a high quality of life for our citizens in a green, safe, clean, and tidy city. Such title is of great importance for Ljubljana, since it is now placed on the European as well as global map of sustainable cities, and at the same time it is the only city in Central and Southeast Europe with the title.

Point. For you.

The May theme is green areas. Ljubljana holds 542 square metres of public green areas per capita. In recent years, 80 hectares of green areas have been developed and degraded urban areas have been changed into green areas.
Green areas as the theme for May have been chosen also due to the European day of parks on 24 May.
At the information spot of the European Green Capital in front of the city hall, there will be many free events daily, some of them are listed here:
Department for Environmental Protection will present the project of restoration of degraded lands, which then became green spots of Ljubljana (Thursday, 5 May). Also, restoration of allotments as an important part of green areas in Ljubljana (Thursday, 12 May) and socially responsible campaign Gloves on! (Friday, 13 May) will be presented.
On Tuesday, 10 May, deputy mayor and the president of the Society of Green Supervisors prof. Janez Koželj will present the society, which spreads the idea of leading by example and thus contributing to our environment. At the same time, the enrolment of new members to the society will take place. The green ambassador of May – the District Community Moste – will introduce their campaigns: Allotment in every Corner and Pets do not leave piles behind.
We would like to invite you to the presentation of the project Sava – bringing the river back to the city. On 20 May, the architect Igor Cotič will introduce the concept of restoration of degraded land along the river Sava in the city municipality of Ljubljana, as well as the expansion of this concept from river spring to mouth.
On 21 May, the presentation of the European project LIFE Ljubljanica connects will take place with the aim of enhancing conditions for fish migrations in Ljubljanica into upstream river parts and therefore improving conditions of threatened fish species according to the IUCN red list.
On 24 May, the European day of parks, two workshops will take place: first, Virtual walk through the forest learning paths Bistra and Barje (by Technical Museum of Slovenia) and second, Scientific walk under the treetops where you will observe the tweeting of birds, tiny animals and other pleasant green things in the forest of experiments at Rožnik (by Slovenian Forestry Institute).
In the May programme of the European Green Capital, KD Rajd will introduce the project of restoration of degraded land in Podutik quarry for mountain biking.
