New greenhouse at the botanical gardens

At the central celebration to mark the 200th birthday of the University of Ljubljana's Botanical Garden, a gala opening of a new tropical greenhouse was held on Friday 10 December 2010.

The new 533m² greenhouse is to offer shelter and appropriate conditions for plants that come from the tropics. Among others, it is to be home to tropical trees such as cocoa, coffee and vanilla. Due to planting, it is expected that the greenhouse will open to the public at the weekend. The exact date will be announced on the Botanical Garden's website.

Ljubljana Botanical Garden, present since the days of the Illyrian Provinces, is the oldest of its kind in south-eastern Europe and the oldest higher educational institution in Slovenia to have been running without interruption. More than 5,000 species of plant beckon over 45,000 walkers and nature lovers every year.

Those assembled at the opening of the Botanical Garden's new greenhouse were also addressed by Mayor Zoran Janković.
