New Trees in Green Ljubljana

On 11 April 2015, a first tree-planting campaign was held during which we planted about 4 thousand trees on Šišenski Hrib, Golovec and in Zajčja Dobrava. The campaign took place under the sign of Ljubljana, European Green Capital 2016.

To make our city even more beautiful and greener, this year we shall plant as much as 12,089 new trees in the areas of Ljubljana that have been affected by glaze ice.

In February last year, Ljubljana was frost-fettered and chained in glaze ice which heavily damaged forests of our city. Long lasting rehabilitation started immediately after the natural disaster, but since glaze ice caused major barren surfaces or gaps it is necessary to restore them. Therefore, we have decided to organise tree-planting campaigns in the context of the traditional spring cleaning action "For a better Ljubljana" and the received title European Green Capital 2016, with which we want to plant trees in the most affected areas pf Ljubljana forests. However, at the same time we shall also plant trees in city's alleys and other public areas.

Campaigns are planned for this and next year. During the first campaign we planted 4,050 seedlings of forest trees, mainly beech, wild cherry, sycamore, oak, pine and walnut. Campaigns were attended by employees of the City Administration of the City of Ljubljana and public companies and institutions that operate under the auspices of the City of Ljubljana. They were joined by some of Ljubljana primary school and nursery children with their companions and local residents, and professional assistance was provided by district foresters from the Slovenia Forest Service, Ljubljana Regional Unit.

Tree-planting campaigns, with which we have and still ensure for future generations to enjoy the walks around the city forest, are only part of the activities of the City of Ljubljana striving for a nice, clean, tidy and green Ljubljana, in which we want to provide good quality and towards sustainability oriented living of all generations of our citizens.
