"Nostalgia" at the Jakopič Promenade
The Jakopič Promenade in Tivoli Park is hosting the world premiere of an exceptional photography exhibition titled Tarkovsky’s Nostalghia – The Journey Within.
English photographer Deborah Beer (1950–1994) has taken over a hundred photographs at the set of Andrej Tarkovsky's masterpiece Nostalghia (1983). The never before displayed photographs are a part of the Gideon Bachmann collection from the Cinemazero Images archives (Pordenone, Italija).
The Tarkovsky's Nostalghia – The Journey Within exhibition has been set up by Kinodvor as part of the Year of Cinema project, which is their second collaboration with the Cinemazero archives from Pordenone. Two years ago, the Kinodvor gallery hosted the beautiful photography exhibition of Gideon Bachmann's photography from the set of Fellini's film 8 1/2.
Kinodvor’s Italian colleagues have introduced the idea of displaying nearly one hundred never before seen photographs from the set of Andrej Tarkovsky's 1983 film Nostalghia. The photographs are a work of Deborah Beer, Brachmann's partner. The first pieces are already known and it is obvious the photographs will appear excellent in nature, as they are mostly exterior. The world premiere envelops international character and charm in the event at hand.
Andrej Tarkovsky's Nostalghia in the Jakopič Promenade will definitely enrich Ljubljana's cultural and tourist offer until the 30 April 2014.
Nostalghia and Kinodvor share a special connection – the film was the final feature of the seven Trakovsky's films, missing from the Slovenska Kinoteka collection. After Kinoteka's renovation and its re-opening of Kinodvor as a full time art cinema in Slovenia, they wished to introduce the practice of reissuing the film classics, Nostalghia being the first film with rights purchased with these intentions. It was screened on Monday, 13 October 2003 in the renovated Kinodvor as the first public film projection within the "On My Own Seat" campaign.
Nostalghia represents a new beginning of the quality film in Ljubljana and it still carries that symbolic meaning.
The author, Andrej Tarkovsky, has always been a special part of the film culture in Slovenia and Ljubljana. He could possibly be a cult director – his body of work is obviously capitalised high art, but he remains "popular" and his film projections are one of the most visited in the cinematheque repertoire.
Kinodvor and Kinoteka have decided to screen Andrej Tarkovsky's seven feature films in the first half of March and conclude with Nostalghia on 12 March 2014. The film will be followed by a debate with Gideon Bachmann on Nostalghia, his wife and long-time partner, Deborah Beer, and their interaction with Tarkovsky.
Ricardo Constantini has curated the exhibition with the assistance of Gideon Bachmann, Raffaella Canci and Marianita Santarosso. The exhibition is made possible by the Ljubljana Tourism Institute, Riko as the official sponsor, and the City of Ljubljana. It is organised by Slovenska Kinoteka, RTV Slovenia as the media partner of the Year of Cinema, and the Italian Cultural Institute of Slovenia.
