The welcome signs, which are square, measuring four metres in height and width, are decorated with motifs of Ljubljana, characteristic of the part of the city that the visitor is driving through. The current themes are a response to the most current event, Slovenia's EU Presidency, as they symbolically represent the bridges of and gateways to Ljubljana, thus showcasing connections and openness and thus themselves expressing and communicating that Ljubljana is in step with the EU, for open communication and to visitors. The themes touch on the motifs of Euro banknotes. The emblem of the City of Ljubljana also features, above which, for Slovenia's EU Presidency, spread 27 stars, each of which symbolises a member state of the EU. This is an archetype that speaks of the stars as guides, that point the way and show the correct path to take. After the end of the Presidency, the signs will stay in place permanently, although the themes will be regularly replaced and updated. They will serve to announce to other visitors that, to highlight just one example, Ljubljana is a university city that knows the meaning of knowledge and the roles of sciences and European development.
