Plečnik's Slovenia

At the 145th anniversary of the birth of the architect Jože Plečnik a photographic exhibition of Plečnik’s architectural gems in Slovenia is on display at the open-air gallery at the Krakow Embankment. The exhibition created in cooperation with Dr Damjan Prelovšek, the author of the photos, is on display until 28 February 2017.

This year the City of Ljubljana is marking the Jože Plečnik year and the exhibition is just one in a series of exhibitions and events taking place during the year in Ljubljana.

Slovenia is full of gems of Plečnik’s art. In 1921, when he returned to his home country after a long stay abroad and was appointed the dean of the faculty of architecture at the newly established University of Ljubljana, he lovingly devoted his work to his nation. He knew how to include everything good created by our predecessors. Plečnik passed on this love also to his students and opened their eyes to the values of our ancient creativity. He used local materials and extracted aesthetic values previously hidden in them. He was pleased when regular people adopted his art as their own. The church in the village Zgornje Stranje at Kamnik which was renovated after the war is an illustrative example of such cooperation where Plečnik masterfully adapted his work to the skills and knowledge of local craftsmen. And the expanded church building in Bogojina in the Prekmurje region is one of the corner stones in modern European sacral architecture. Between the church and numerous monuments, features and chapels there is a vast array of ingenious architectural ideas. The presented works are modestly encouraging you to discover many other works you may not be familiar with.
