Plečnik’s Thematic Cycling Path

Within the framework of the Cycling Festival 2016 a new thematic cycling path has come to life – the Plečnik Path.

The Plečnik cycling path that connects Plečnik’s heritage in Trnovo, Žale and Tivoli was opened, on 14 April 2016, by the Deputy Mayor Prof Janez Koželj and the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Republic of Slovenia Bart Twaalfhoven.
The aim of the thematic cycling paths is on one hand to set up attractive cycling paths between different parts of Ljubljana on less congested streets for daily travels citizens make on bikes (school, work ...).
And at the same time these paths represent an extension of what Ljubljana has to offer to its visitors who can go on a bike-ride and experience Plečnik’s architecture, the beauty of the Ljubljanica River or the green wedges of the city.

This is the third thematic cycling path; in addition to Plečnik’s there is the Waterside Path which runs from the Fužine Castle over the embankments of the Ljubljanica River to the waterfront Špica, and the Forest Path around the foot of Rožnik Hill connecting Tivoli Park with Mostec Park.

The thematic cycling paths were planned, in cooperation with the City of Ljubljana, by the association Za mesto po dveh (For a City on Two) within the framework of the Do the Right Mix campaign. Ljubljana Tourism provided the path markings and is offering tours of Ljubljana with new bikes on a route with some of its sections coinciding with the mentioned thematic cycling paths.

This way we are promoting cycling within the scope of the title European Green Capital as it is one of the most efficient methods of traveling in the city, and are confirming that Ljubljana is a bicycle friendly city.
