Project Water

Project WATER is a tribute to Ljubljana’s pearl, natural drinking water, which has to be sensibly and sustainably managed to remain plentiful for the coming generations.

The core element of the project is the exhibition VODA/WATER presenting, until the beginning of May next year, the role of water in the past and present as well as the significance of preserving water for the future.

Exhibition Water

The exhibition, which is thematically part of commemorating Ljubljana as the European Green Capital 2016, represents through four main stories in different time contexts the significance of water for survival, mobility of people and goods as well as ideas and knowledge, mythology and beliefs, art and language. These topics are introduced to the audience in an imaginative showcase of almost 250 diverse objects from museum collections of Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana. Visitors are going to learn the most about the importance water in the natural water cycle, ecology and drinking water preservation in the experimental room of the museum designated for teaching programmes for kindergartens, primary and secondary schools and families.

The main exhibition Water is coinciding with three specific exhibitions: firstly, the public company Vodovod-Kanalizacija is holding an exhibition at the 125th anniversary of the Ljubljana’s water supply network, followed by the exhibition H2OLLAND presented by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and, lastly, the exhibition Ljubljana, European Green Capital 2016, from the second half of January till the beginning of May 2016, is marking the capital’s celebrations.

Water in the museum – water in the city

In our capital water is everywhere and, for this reason, the exhibition Water is going to ‘spill’ all over Ljubljana with different projects. The project Naliv umetnika (Artist’s Downpour) by Matej Andraž Vogrinčič is going to run at the French Revolution Square until 20 September 2015. In the exhibition area on the Jakopič promenade a water themed exhibition conceived by curators Maja Bahar and Irena Šinkovec is going to be on display during the summer. And in spring 2016 photos with the river Ljubljanica theme are going to adorn the Krakovo Embankment.

Museum Water – Water for the Future

The exhibition Water is accompanied by the project Museum Water – Water for the Future. The project is based on the principle that the citizens of Ljubljana can be proud to have such excellent water coming out of our faucets and drinking fountains every day. The project Museum Water – Water for the Future is also part of Ljubljana’s showcase at the exhibition EXPO in Milano. The visitors of EXPO can find a special message in the bottle inviting them to Ljubljana for a sip of natural drinking water.

The Museum Water is basically a bottle designed with a visible handprint of an inhabitant of a small village in the Nubian mountains where people live in harsh conditions and it is difficult for them to get to drinking water on daily basis. The hand print has a symbolic meaning – drinking water is a symbol of life and the essence of the future of humanity, that is why we have to be constantly aware of how precious it is and that its reserves on our planet are not limitless.

The bottle Museum water will be available at the store of the City Museum of Ljubljana and at select locations across Ljubljana.
