The 63rd Edition of Ljubljana Festival

The Ljubljana Festival, one of the more important summer festivals in Europe, will again mark the summer in Ljubljana. It will take place from 28 June to 28 September 2015.

The visitors will enjoy the performances of the established Slovenian and world artists in the fields of music, opera, dance, musical and theatre. The 63rd edition of the Ljubljana Festival will officially commence on 28 June with the visual-music performance of an Oscar winner, Tan Dun, who will also conduct the performance in Ljubljana. The Polish Requiem will follow the baton of one of the most important Polish composers and conductors, 81-year-old Krzysztof Penderecki, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by Zubin Mejta, while Jonathan Nott will direct the performance of the Young German Philharmonia which will draw the final curtain of a long festival summer on 28 September. Interesting opera nights will take place in the company of Elīna Garanča in Željko Lučić and guest appearances of the China National Opera House from Peking performing Turandot and the Sofia National Opera and Ballet with Tristan and Isolde. The Mariinsky Theatre is back from Saint Peterburg, this time performing Romeo and Juliet ballet in full cast. The festival will host Edward Clug and the international dance coproduction in cooperation with our EnKnapGroup. There will be two musicals this year – in addition to the repetition of extremely successful Blossoms in Autumn, the first performance of the popular Mamma Mia! will be on the schedule in Autumn. The Great Faust Story, a man who sold his soul to the devil, is brought by Tomaž Pandur.

The 63rd Ljubljana Festival will also host the Summer Night, this year dedicated to Elza Budau, Belarusian National Chamber Choir, Hover State Choir of Armenia, Slovene Octet, the pianists Nikolaj Luganski, Dalibor Miklavčič and Tina Mauki, violinist Lana Trotovšek, Slovene Philharmonic String Chamber Orchestra, the 2Cellos group, Tomaž Domicelj, Vlado Kreslin, Uroš Perić and others.

At the presentation of the Festival programme, the City Hall Mayor Zoran Janković, the honorary patron of the 63rd Ljubljana Festival emphasised that the Ljubljana Festival remains an integral part of the good Ljubljana summer vibe. He gave thanks to the director Darko Brlek and his associates and promised the future support of the City of Ljubljana. "I would like to thank all the sponsors of the festival who prove with their support in these hard times that investments in the art are not considered an expense, but rather an investment in the future," said the Mayor and added that the chairmen of the board need to be congratulated for their courage to donate means for culture, social affairs, sports or education. He also stated that Ljubljana is a proud winner of three exceptional awards – the prestige European Green Capital Award 2016, and a two-time winner of the European Mobility Week award. Recently the city also received the award for the most sustainable future tourist destination in the world. "This award is the highest decoration in the world in the field of sustainable trends in traffic and tourist industry, from which great economic effects are expected. Foreign visitors, coming to Ljubljana in the summer, could see the charms of the most beautiful city in the world during the day, while enjoying the evenings in premium artistic performances", concluded the Mayor Zoran Janković.
