The first real children's laboratory
Young pioneers in natural and other sciences have a new home in Pionirski dom – Centre for Youth Culture, where the first real children's laboratory of the next generation has opened, giving children an experience previously available only to adults.
In an innovative, creative and safe way, they will be introduced to the key fields that will shape the professions of the future: science, biochemistry, physics, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The Laboratory offers a safe and stimulating environment for research
In the new laboratory, specially designed for Pionirski dom by the pharmaceutical company Lek, children can safely perform experiments and test their ideas, helping them to understand concepts they find difficult to grasp. Natural sciences are presented as easily understandable and extremely interesting. Working in a laboratory encourages critical thinking and learning about natural laws. The laboratory is an innovative way for children to learn about science, biochemistry, physics, technology, engineering and mathematics. These are key areas that will shape the professions of the future.
A rich programme of experiments in the form of group workshops is designed for children aged four to twelve years and is adapted to developmental stages.
Laboratory tailored to students' wishes
Barbara Murn Vrviščar, Director of Pionirski dom, pointed out at the opening that she had listened to the students and teachers when she came up with the idea for the laboratory. »Ideas should always come from their desires because they know what they need to be creative. The lab has also been their unspoken wish for a long time. But for such a big project, we needed an expert partner.« The Director of Pionirski dom adds that she has noticed a decline in interest in natural sciences: »Not because of natural sciences themselves, which are fascinating as sciences, but perhaps because of the school curriculum, the lack of promotion by the profession and general trends that have become superficial. You can explain to a youngster how hydrogen peroxide reacts with potassium iodide using a formula. Or, like us, you can do an appealing experiment with coloured foam that goes high up in the air.«
Research programme for almost 30 years
For almost three decades, Pionirski dom – Centre for Youth Culture has devoted particular attention to science, in addition to its varied and content-rich programmes. With its iconic status in the social life of the capital, it remains a leader in the field of extracurricular free-time activities for children, youth and adults. Their mission is to impart knowledge through art, culture and science. Its founder, the City of Ljubljana, and a great supporter of Pionirski dom, favours new ideas and change. Zoran Janković, Mayor of Ljubljana, emphasised that the young people have the best ideas. »We need to support children and young people in their ideas. The new laboratory at Pionirski dom will train natural scientists, and here they will learn work habits, responsibility and innovativeness. Linking business, culture and sport combines the development of potential and the joy of life. Let our children enjoy the new laboratory of Pionirski dom and Lek!«
