The 19. World Conference of the League of Historic Cities, which brings together cities rich in cultural heritage, was held in Ljubljana from 12. to 14. November 2024. At the end of the conference, representatives of the participating cities also signed the Ljubljana Declaration.

The conference brought together 120 participants from 27 cities in 15 countries. The main theme was creating vibrant and pedestrian-friendly city centres with sustainable mobility solutions, and in this context, participants exchanged good practices in the preservation of historic city centres, and discussed the challenges and opportunities for sustainable development in historic city centres, focusing on people. They also explored sustainable mobility as a tool for protecting cultural heritage and improving the quality of life in historic cities.

Ljubljana Declaration

At the end of the conference, representatives of all participating cities signed the Ljubljana Declaration, in which they committed to implementing principles such as preserving cultural heritage, sustainable urban development, promoting cultural exchanges, educating and raising public awareness, and ensuring inclusive and accessible city centres for all. The declaration was signed on behalf of the City of Ljubljana by Deputy Mayor Dejan Crnek.

Mayor Zoran Janković also hosted the President of the League of Historic Cities and the Mayor of Kyoto Koji Matsui within the framework of the conference at the City Hall.
