You can take a bus ride with a payment card
Starting 29 November 2023, passengers can use payment cards to pay for rides on city and intercity bus lines.
The new technological solution, with which card payment has joined other methods of paying for rides, is a welcome novelty that will make bus travel easier, especially for occasional users, visitors and tourists. The technological solution was designed in collaboration between the City of Ljubljana, the public company Ljubljanski potniški promet, Margenta, Nova Ljubljanska banka, Bankart, Visa and Mastercard.
On the path to carbon neutrality
As a city selected for the Mission of 100 climate-neutral and smart European cities last April and in line with its integrated transport strategy, Ljubljana is actively building its vision of the urban future, which will achieve the decarbonisation of society by 2030 through numerous activities and projects. An important area of decarbonisation derives from challenges in the field of transport and travel habits, where the promotion of sustainable forms of mobility and improvements and changes in public passenger transport play a decisive role. The introduction of a new method of paying for rides in public passenger transport is based on sustainability and even easier accessibility. The new digital solution, together with the well-established Urbana city card and other payment methods, expands the possibilities of using passenger transport and further increases its accessibility.
A new method of paying for rides
The option of using payment cards is a novelty in Slovenian public passenger transport and gives regular and occasional LPP users an easy solution at their fingertips – simple payment with a payment card, mobile wallet or other wearable device. When paying for rides with payment cards, a free-of-charge change between buses within 90 minutes is not possible.
The dynamic development that Ljubljana has been experiencing in recent years is also founded on strategic technological development and solid partnerships between key stakeholders in the field of mobility, digitalisation and sustainable solutions. The implementation of the technological solution is the result of several years of development and cooperation between partners, both in the private and public sectors, who together provide pieces in the mosaic of the structure of smart urban solutions.
