Recommendations for street performances
As public spaces are an open space for everyone, we would like to maintain tolerance, understanding and respect for the interests of all stakeholders. We therefore invite you to take into account the following recommendations when performing on the street:
- when preparing for your performance, be aware that you are part of the wider community of surrounding residents, businesses, caterers, providers of various services and other stakeholders in the old town, so also respect their wishes and interests;
- street artists may only perform at designated locations (specified in the Ordinance on the Special Use of Public Areas and presented in the attached folder);
- you may remain at a single location for a maximum of two hours, and must then give other street artists the opportunity to perform;
- you may only be present at an individual location once a day, as in this way you ensure a culture of changing locations and collegiality, and avoid the "appropriation" of an individual venue. At the same time, you are considerate of the surrounding residents and employees, and thus provide them with more diverse artistic content;
- adhere to the timeframes within which street performances are allowed (presented in the table below);
- we encourage you to avoid repetition in your performance. However, if your repertoire includes only a few songs, we encourage you to – in the interest of the surrounding residents and employees – finish your performance in less than two hours and move to another location;
- do not significantly exceed the noise from the surroundings with your performance, as excessive noise and the use of sound amplifiers are not allowed, as this can cause inconvenience to residents, visitors and employees in the city centre if nearby residents or city staff warn you that you are too loud, try to comply with their wishes, especially during evening hours;
- when a public event is taking place nearby, withdraw to another permitted location;
- before your performance, make sure that you do not prevent the normal use of the street or square, and block access to buildings or views of shop windows;
- if you are not sure whether the setting of the venue could disturb the surrounding residents, businesses, caterers or service providers, ask them for their opinion before the performance;
- if you use fire, flammable objects or any other dangerous means in your performance, properly mark and secure the venue of your performance and make sure that your performance does not endanger your spectators or passers-by;
- expect only voluntary contributions for your street performances;
- resolve any open issues or disputes with respectful speech and in a tolerant manner, as this is the easiest and most effective way to resolve potential disputes; and
- if you find that one of the other street artists still does not follow the rules and recommendations and does not respond to your calls to respect them, call the Inspectorate of the City of Ljubljana at +386 1 306 1600 for assistance.
